Too much story content in Destiny 2? Bungie hopes players complain about it

Can a game have too much story? The action shooter MMO Destiny 2 will include a large amount of Story content that Bungie hopes players will complain about.

With the release of Destiny it was clear that this would be a game driven by grinding and less about the story, at least prior to the release of the Taken King expansion. Fortunately Bungie has learned from their mistakes and will be giving players a wealth of Story content in the upcoming action MMO Destiny 2. When it comes to a large MMO style game, many seek varied quests and storytelling that can last them upwards of 50+ hours or more. Since the original game felt a little lacking with story (including unresolved plot points), it would make sense that some may feel the sequel will repeat it's mistakes.

However that's not the case and this time Bungie are heavily invested into creating a large living world with plenty of story to offer, infact they are even hoping players complain about the amount of content on offer! In the latest video by IGN the developers take the spotlight to talk a bit more about what players can expect with Destiny 2's story content.

The focus this time will give players a way to explore the Destiny universe on a grand scale, where as the original game was more about trying to set the universe - in Destiny 2 things will be ramped up to extreme as you're able to tackle various side mission stories that may offer you new answers to questions that don't follow the main story. Quests like this have been in MMO's for years and it's a nice change of pace to see them taking this approach with Destiny 2.

Jason Harris (Senior Narrative Lead) and Matthew Ward (Cinematic Lead) work for Bungie together on the story, in an attempt to build upon the foundations of the original Destiny. With a focus on the villain Ghaul, his army and the Guardians who will stop him in Destiny 2. Harris added:

I think it’s important to really understand the studio spent a lot of time world building. I can’t emphasize enough that we are ready to tell stories in this world. Big, expansive, and cinematic stories.

Lead designer Matthew Ward went on to explain that player feedback was important to the team and they have listened to the community to create stories they would want to play:

We certainly learned a lot by listening to people, by playing it with other people, by exploring the world in a one to one manner with our audience. As we explored it, we found stories that we personally wanted to tell. We’re learning from all the feedback we got from Destiny 1, and applying it.

Players will also see returning faces to the sequel, as NPC's from the original Destiny make their return once more to lend aid to fighting Ghaul and his Army. Some of the faces returning including Titan Vanguard Commander Zavala, Hunter Vanguard Cayde-6 and Warlock Vanguard Ikore Rey. With the loss of "the light" players will challenge players to figure out their place in the universe and make them question why they are still a Guardian. As the story progresses they will adapt and maybe gain back some of the lost power they once had, but will things ever be the same again? Can they band together and stand against Ghaul in his attempt to take on The Traveler? You can expect a number of questions to be answered this time around, though it's been revealed that the Darkness from the original game may not be explored (at least at first) in Destiny 2.

Harris suggests another approach to storytelling:

I think players are ultimately going to see a wide variety of story channels and an eclectic number of outlets to see story infused throughout the game. There is story everywhere.
