Destiny 2 Story will be greatly improved, offering multiple layers

Destiny 2 to take on a different approach to storytelling, with more layers of story to uncover. Bungie confirms they will be giving players a chance to take on new stories within the game.

When the original Destiny launched, it was lacking a proper narrative experience and it wasn't until a few expansions later, with the release of The Taken King that we started to see a focus on the story. Destiny 2 will center around the Red War, with the Cabal's leader Dominus Ghaul taking the fight to the Guardians in an attempt to destroy them. We saw glimpses of it in the past, but now we'll get a fleshed out experience which is on par with other story driven titles.

GamesRadar spoke to Bungie's Game Director Luke Smith about some of the biggest changes from the original game, with an emphasis on traveling to new worlds and finding new stories to engage with.

Previously in Destiny, we had the Darkness - but they were shrouded in mystery and it was not really clear on who they were or what drove them. Smith explained, that they were at a loss trying to clarify the Darkness:

"So, I think that at a point, just totally candidly? We had no idea what it was. Straight up. We had no clue," Smith said. "We didn’t know what it was, and we, for a period, we chose [that] we’re going to lump all the races [in together], and you see this in the tooltips in the game. 'Minions of the Darkness.' And we had taken all the races and said, 'Ah, they’ll just be the Darkness.' But that’s not what the IP deserves."

This time around though things are looking up as the focus revolves around the Red War and Dominus Ghaul, which will also include an "epic scenario" that players can get involved with. It seems like the team at Bungie are trying not to avoid their past mistakes, with Destiny 2 the players will be able to take on multiple stories that may not be related to the Red War, but rather offer a new story to try.

As the leader of the Cabal, Ghaul will lead his troops in a battle for domination and fight against the Guardians. Motivated by ultimate goal of claiming the Traveler and its Light for himself, he will stop at nothing to get what he wants. When the game begins, you'll be powered up but as you progress you'll eventually lose your powers and have to reclaim them as you work through the story.

Smith continued:

“We want people to understand the coherent story we’re telling in Destiny 2, we want people to loathe Dominus Ghaul, we want people to love the characters we’re putting in to the game. The game is going to feel like a completely different thing”.

Destiny 2's story will be about hope and having to deal with the aftermath of the opening moments from the game. As we get deeper into the campaign, we'll also learn more about Ghaul's backstory and what drove him to the events which started the game. The Consul (Ghaul's Mentor) will also be making an appearance and while it's unclear what role he'll serve, we can only imagine he too is just as evil.

Adventures will be marked on your map, a feature which is new to the sequel and will give a new way to take on missions (including the main story). Ultimately, Destiny 2 will be a fresh experience for most players and whether you have played the previous game or not, everyone will be able to enjoy the game and it's story.

Destiny 2 will be coming to PC on October 24th, you can pre-order to get your officially licensed Battle Net key and get Early Access to the upcoming Beta in August!
