20 Minutes of Marvel's Midnight Suns Gameplay Footage

More than "just" an XCOM: Marvel's Midnight Suns turns out to be an exciting mix of turn-based tactics, role-playing and a lot of Marvel story around it in the developer presentation. Definitely watch it!

The trailer for the announcement of Marvel's Midnight Suns at Gamescom 2021 was beautiful. Afterwards, we knew that Firaxis Studios and 2K were working on a Marvel title that should play something like XCOM. Not an action game, but strategy. But we have been denied really deep insights into the gameplay so far. Until now.

During an extended game presentation of Marvel's Midnight Suns we even got to see a surprising amount of the game. You can watch the recording of the stream here with 20 minutes of commented gameplay footage from the devs:

Right at the beginning, the developers point out in the conversation that microtransactions are not planned in Marvel's Midnight Suns. Every ability your heroes have in the game is also in the final game. You just have to unlock them in the usual way. After the rumours were put to rest, the presentation started and we see Marvel heroes, or rather an individualised slayer (who can be customised), standing in front of the brand new "hub" known as The Abbey.

At the beginning, this really doesn't look like an XCOM derivative. But then. As soon as the first battle in Marvel's Midnight Suns begins, the sun rises for all XCOM fans. The scene seems frozen, the game waits for the player's first move. Turn-based tactics, the way we love them! Unlike XCOM, Marvel's Midnight Suns puts some playing cards in your hand. You use them to trigger special hero tactics. And it's also visually quite beautifully done.

Of course, Marvel's Midnight Suns is not trying to compete with Hearthstone or other card games. The differences to XCOM also become clearer as the presentation progresses. MMS, for example, plays a little faster. The first battle is immediately followed by the first cinematic cutscene, which Marvel fans can't get enough of, as expected. Good news: In the stream, a developer promises "hours" of footage.

After a successful battle, the heroes meet in a kind of social hub, exchange information there and maintain their connections. You choose who you hang out with. The developers say that role-playing aspects should not be neglected and that you can freely explore the area around the Abbey. An exciting mix!

Marvel's Midnight Suns is launching in 2022 and will be available soon on Gamesplanet.
