Metro 2039: New ‘Renegade’ trailer reveals the protagonist’s dark side

Metro 2039 is getting a new gameplay trailer called “Renegade” for Gamescom, which delves deep into the past of the protagonist, The Stranger.

At the Opening Night Live event at Gamescom in Cologne, 4A Games not only highlighted the appalling conditions under which the Ukrainian studio is forced to work, but also showcased new gameplay footage from Metro 2039. The trailer, which runs for around two minutes, is titled “Renegade” and was captured entirely within the game engine using specially choreographed camera work. The focus is on The Stranger, the series’ new speaking protagonist, whose shadowy past and motives become much clearer here.

Brutal infiltration of occupied Moscow

The video shows your hero using ruthless methods to gain access to Novoreich-controlled Moscow – any allusions to the current situation in Russia are purely coincidental. The video depicts both the bleak everyday life at Sevastopolskaya station and the irradiated, deadly surface of the city. In terms of gameplay, Metro 2039 continues to deliver gripping first-person action, powered by the in-house 4A Engine, and, as ever, features an atmospherically overwhelming setting in a devastated region.

The trailer was presented by Executive Producer Jon Bloch and Co-Creative Director Pavel Ulmer. The next instalment in the Metro series is being developed largely in Ukraine – despite the ongoing Russian war of aggression, 4A Games is continuing its work and continues to support its team on the ground. Metro 2039 is due for release on PC in February 2027.
