SILENT HILL f - Review Score Roundup

Tomorrow, Silent Hill f will be available in Advanced Access for owners of the Deluxe Edition, with the official release date set for September 25. How has Konami's Japanese horror game been received by the trade press? Here is an overview of the reviews.

“Not a real Silent Hill!!!1f,” “Stupid setting!”, “Woke game! Don't want to play a schoolgirl!” ... Games from a major IP sometimes have a hard time living up to everyone's expectations. Naturally, a new Silent Hill gets all the attention. Which is actually good and right. Even the trade press doesn't always agree. Although the ratings now show that Silent Hill f has turned out to be a really good horror adventure (Metacritic average is currently 86, Opencritic 88), there are still a few outliers.

After last year's fantastic Silent Hill 2 remake by Bloober Team, it's clear that the series is the best it's ever been. IGN praises the new change in setting, but was a little underwhelmed in the melee combat. "Silent Hill f presents a fresh new setting to explore and a fascinatingly dark story to unravel, but its melee-focussed combat takes a big swing that doesn’t quite land. " - but still gave it a reasonable 7/10 (Silent Hill 2 was given a 8/10).

Meanwhile PC Gamer awarded it a high 90/100 and loved the setting of Ebisugaoka, which is a rural Japanese town that brings with it sweeping fog (would it be a Silent Hill game without Fog?) and plenty of areas to discover. While not a "soulslike", the game does itself have some challenging encounters and you'll want to stay on your toes in order to survive - especially with bosses. "These big fights are more about showcasing hauntingly beautiful monster designs, some incredible music, and work as an exposé as to what awful thoughts Hinako has locked away in the darkest parts of her mind."
