Starfield - Everything you need to know!

The galaxy is your playground, with the hugely anticipated Starfield from Bethesda Game Studios, launching on September 6th (or September 1st with the Premium Edition). Get up to speed with our recap guide while you wait!

What is Starfield?

Starfield is an upcoming open world RPG from Bethesda Game Studios, you know the ones responsible for creating some of the most epic RPGs of all time such as the hugely popular The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Fallout 4 to name but a few. The game has been in development for quite a while, with it having starting roots all the way back in 2015, just after the release of their last game Fallout 4 so it's had time to bake in the oven.

With all that time in development it's clear that the game has been a long journey, and will finally see the light at the end of the tunnel with the Early Access release later this week on September 1st. Players will be able to set out into the galaxy, which has a rich history as they explore over 1000 planets, some large, some small. Of course getting to the planets will also require you to have your own starship, and thankfully you can customise quite a bit of the interior, exterior, systems and crew you'll need for space journeys.

Like previous Bethesda Game Studios RPGs, you start off by making your character using the detailed creation tools to customize them the way you like. As you progress through the game you'll get new abilities and be able to spend skill points in the 5 distinct trees: Physical, Social, Combat, Science, and Tech. There's also a plethora of weapons at your disposal, and like with your starship, they can be fully customised with attachments that alter their usefulness in combat. Speaking of combat, the FPS Gods at ID Software (DOOM) helped Bethesda Game Studios by bringing their flavour of satisfying gunplay to the game.

And that's just the tip of the starship, with companions, Jet Packs, Player Housing and much much more, you'll be sure to be playing Starfield for months, if not years. Truly the only limit to the game is your imagination as you explore the sandbox universe. That's not even considering any mods for the game which may appear further down the line!

Whether you're a fan of previous Bethesda Game Studios work, or simply looking for a Sci-Fi open world RPG to sink your time into, then Starfield is the game for you.

Starfield PC system requirements

Blast into space, but make sure your PC can handle deep space with the PC System Requirements from Starfield, courtesy of Bethesda. Those looking to get the bare minimum will need either an Intel Core i7-6800K or a AMD Ryzen 5 2600X processor, paired with either a NVIDIA GeForce 1070 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 5700. You'll also need a SSD with 125 gigs of storage, and Windows 10/11 with 16 GB RAM.

Though if you want to get the most out of the game it's recommended to have at least an AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel i5-10600K paired with either an AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT / NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 GPU. Luckily they are fairly tame specs for more recent machines and most people should easily be able to handle that. At present it's been confirmed that FSR will be supported, but DLSS and other forms of upscaling will not be included at release - though whether that changes post-launch remains to be seen.

As always we'd recommend making sure you have the latest drivers for your Graphics Card to ensure the smoothest experience at release - AMD / Nvidia.

Will Starfield run on the Steam Deck?

Due to the scope of the game, and also the 30 FPS lock on Xbox Series X/S it's unlikely the game will have a good experience on deck - if it even runs at all. While it may work, it would probably be really demanding and not the best experience.
