What is The Blood of Dawnwalker about?

Behind The Blood of Dawnwalker are Polish developer Rebel Wolves and publisher Bandai Namco. Rebel Wolves was founded by several talented developers from CD Projekt Red, including the former Game Director of The Witcher 3, who also worked on Cyberpunk 2077. That's quite the pedigree. The Blood of Dawnwalker is the studio's debut title, however, so the team is looking to make its mark with a dark, handcrafted open world and a heavily branching story. According to reviews, they've absolutely succeeded.

The story of The Blood of Dawnwalker takes you to 14th-century Europe, a difficult era filled with superstition - and if the wars don't kill you, some kind of plague probably will. As the Black Death decimates entire regions, vampires and other creatures of the night take advantage of humanity's weakness to emerge from the shadows and seize power. Myths suddenly become reality, and the course of history is thrown into chaos.

In this hostile world, you take on the role of Coen, who becomes a so-called "Dawnwalker" after a fateful bite - an ordinary human by day and a vampire with supernatural powers by night. Coen also has a clear goal: save his family before it's too late. Whether he holds on to his humanity or gives in to his darker side is up to you. The central question running throughout the game is simple: is sacrificing your soul worth it to save the people you love?

Your choices shape the story

The Blood of Dawnwalker comes with some serious consequences: your decisions don't just determine who you help and who you turn your back on, but also how the story unfolds. Whether you want to save Coen's family at all costs or embark on a quest for revenge against the person who turned him into a vampire in the first place is entirely up to you. Maybe you can even do both?

The gameplay deliberately separates the experience into two completely different rhythms for day and night. As a human, you'll have access to different abilities, routes and approaches than in Coen's vampiric form, where claws, superhuman strength and dark magic come into play. Throughout it all, you'll have to keep a close eye on a ticking clock, as every task you accept moves time forward and brings Coen's family's fate closer to its end. Hesitate for too long, and you may miss your chance to help certain characters altogether.

Alongside weapon-based combat with a sword in your human form, you'll also be able to unleash devastating melee abilities and gravity-defying movement options as a vampire. The open world takes you through dense forests, barren plains, dangerous marshes, rugged mountain regions and medieval settlements - complete with forgotten ruins and remnants of a lost civilization, hiding secrets that perhaps should have remained buried. The entire game is powered by the latest version of Unreal Engine 5.
