Town to City: The city-building sim with a very special pixel look

What if there were such a thing as the ideal city? Town to City invites you to answer this question with a few clicks of the mouse.

Since ancient times, people have dreamed of perfect cities. Plato imagined them in ‘The Republic’, Thomas More described them in ‘Utopia’ in 1516, and 20th-century architects such as Le Corbusier designed radiant cities that were supposed to solve all of society's ills.

But the idea of a city where everything is harmonious (smooth traffic, affordable housing, green spaces everywhere, safety, social diversity and an optimal quality of life for all) is based on several principles:

  • Ecology: sustainable buildings, renewable energies, intelligent waste management.
  • Mobility: efficient public transport, safe cycle paths and a reduction in the space required for cars.
  • Inclusion: affordable housing, accessible public spaces and social and cultural diversity.
  • Technology: smart cities where data improves the management of resources and services.
  • Well-being: parks, meeting places and a vibrant neighbourhood life.

Some cities claim to come close to this ideal: Copenhagen, for example, presents itself as a carbon-neutral cycling capital with neighbourhoods designed for the well-being of its residents, while Singapore sees itself as a highly connected garden city where nature and technology coexist. Curitiba in Brazil describes itself as a pioneer in public transport and recycling.

However, the ideal city remains just that: an ideal. The challenges are numerous:

  • Building an ecological and inclusive city is often very expensive.
  • Ambitious urban projects can unfortunately displace low-income populations.
  • A city that is too heavily planned can lack spontaneity and diversity.
  • Without the consent of its residents, even the best utopia will fail.
  • Town to City allows you to try your hand at urban utopia, offering a whole range of choices and solutions tailored to your vision.

Your city must balance innovation, ecology and justice while leaving room for the unexpected and creativity.

After all, your ideal city is above all a city where you and your friends would like to live... together.
