The Gothic 1 Remake marks the return of a cult classic RPG from the early 2000s. Yes, cult classic. The term may be overused, but it fits perfectly here. Those who know it, know it. Here’s everything you need to know before the June 5 release, before you return to the Valley of the Mines.
What is the Gothic 1 Remake?
Gothic was originally released in 2001 and offered a believable open world as well as great freedom in how you approached the game, which has inspired numerous modern RPGs. In the Gothic 1 Remake, you take on the role of a “nameless hero,” a convict sent to the penal colony of Khorinis. Following a magical accident (likely a critical failure), a gigantic barrier traps the inmates in the Valley of the Mines. The prisoners quickly take control of the region and establish several rival camps. Survival proves to be a complex task, requiring you to choose your alliances carefully and keep an eye on the threats in the surrounding area.
The Gothic remake is based on Unreal Engine 5 and completely rebuilds the original game—with modern graphics, brand-new animations, revamped and expanded environments, and a modernized combat system. However, developer Alkimia Interactive places particular emphasis on preserving the spirit of the original Gothic, particularly its vibrant world, the flexible routines of the NPCs, the largely autonomous exploration, and the long-term consequences of the player’s decisions. Don’t expect icons or markers to spell out the game for you. Playing through Gothic is a hands-on experience.
