Download speeds have actually improved since the game launched yes, we even got new servers to help with the load. We understand some people are still having issues but this is a small number of users and doesn't happen to everyone.
Generally speaking separate files should be the best option for troubleshooting crashes/slower speeds.
If you are having issues with the downloader crashing then its possibly another issue (maybe firewall related). This could also explain the slower speeds for you, feel free to reach out to [email protected] if you wish though.

But to be fair, I did buy it because I saw an article on Arstechnica about the game and how Steam banned it. I hate censorship so I bought it, and I loved it.
