Installing and using DirectX 9 with Windows 8 and 10

Some games require DirectX 9 or certain components thereof. If these files are not supplied by the game, you will often get error messages when launching your game.

Windows 8 and 10 do not include DirectX 9 any longer. Fortunately, we can fix this... and this is how it works:

  1. Download DirectX 9 from Microsoft:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=8109
  2. Once you execute the downloaded file, you will be asked where to extract it to. Choose a directory, e.g. a new directory "DirectX9" on your desktop
  3. After extraction, open the folder and double click: DXSETUP.exe

Following these steps, DirectX 9 can successfully be installed on Windows 8 and Windows 10.
